The Cayman Islands mourn the loss of Ramon Alberga QC, a legal giant affectionately known as the “Father of the Cayman Islands Bar,” who passed away at the age of 95. With a career spanning over seven decades, Alberga’s profound influence on the legal landscape of the Cayman Islands remains unmatched.

Called to the English Bar at Middle Temple in 1951 and the Jamaican Bar shortly after, Alberga first appeared in the Cayman Islands Grand Court in 1964. He relocated to the Cayman Islands in 1976, where he held prominent roles, including vice president of the Jamaica Law Society and president of the Cayman Islands Law Society.

One of his landmark contributions was the establishment of the Cayman Islands Law Reports in the early 1980s. Alberga’s personal collection of judgments, dating back to 1952, formed the foundation for these reports, with the first volume published in 1987. As consulting editor until 2020, he demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing legal scholarship.

In 2011, Alberga received the rare honor of having his portrait hung in the courthouse—a testament to his exceptional service and respect within the legal fraternity.

His legacy endures through his son, Michael Alberga, a prominent figure in Cayman Islands’ legal and business communities. Michael has continued the family tradition, excelling in areas like regulatory practice, government relations, and advising high-net-worth clients.

Ramon Alberga QC leaves behind a towering legacy of expertise, leadership, and inspiration that has shaped the Cayman Islands’ legal framework and will guide future generations.
