Cayman Islands Election 2025: A New Era of Coalition Politics and Reform

The 2025 general election in the Cayman Islands, held on April 30, marked a major shift. No single party won a majority, leading to a coalition government. This result reflects the growing complexity and evolution of Caymanian politics.

📊 Election Results: A Divided Parliament

The People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) won the most seats, taking 7 out of 19. However, this was not enough to form a majority. Two new parties—the Cayman Islands National Party (CINP) and the Caymanian Community Party (TCCP)—each secured 4 seats. Meanwhile, 3 independent candidates claimed victory. As a result, their support became crucial to forming a government.

🤝 A Coalition Government Takes Shape

André Ebanks has been named Premier. He will lead a coalition made up of the CINP, TCCP, and three independents. This move marks a shift away from traditional two-party control. Consequently, newer parties and independent voices now hold more power and influence.

🗳️ Referendum Results Reflect Public Opinion

In addition to voting for candidates, citizens also participated in a nonbinding referendum. It included three key topics:

  • Marijuana Decriminalization: Most voters supported easing laws on small-scale use.

  • National Lottery: The public backed the idea, showing interest in new revenue options.

  • Cruise Berthing Facilities: Voters rejected the proposal, citing environmental concerns.

These results reveal changing public attitudes on social and environmental issues.

⚠️ Political Upsets and New Faces

One of the biggest surprises came in West Bay West. There, independent candidate Julie Hunter defeated former Premier McKeeva Bush. Her win was seen as a call for change. Bush’s legal controversies likely played a role in his defeat.

đź”® What Lies Ahead

The new coalition led by André Ebanks faces many challenges. It must balance different viewpoints while addressing issues like inflation and cost of living. Fortunately, the diverse makeup of the new government could lead to more inclusive decisions.

At the same time, the referendum results show strong public interest in progress and reform. Therefore, the new government must listen closely and act decisively.
