The Cayman Islands mourn the passing of Ramon Alberga QC, a legal icon and true Cayman Islands Bar pioneer. Affectionately known as the “Father of the Cayman Islands Bar,” Alberga passed away at 95. His legacy spans more than seven decades and has left a permanent mark on the legal system.

A Legal Career Rooted in Leadership

Ramon Alberga began his legal career in 1951 when he was called to the English Bar at Middle Temple. Shortly after, he joined the Jamaican Bar. By 1964, he had already made his first appearance in the Cayman Islands Grand Court. This was the start of his enduring impact on Cayman’s legal framework.

In 1976, Alberga officially moved to the Cayman Islands. From that point onward, he played a key role in the legal community. He served as vice president of the Jamaica Law Society and later as president of the Cayman Islands Law Society. These positions allowed him to lead by example and influence the profession on multiple fronts.

Strengthening Legal Infrastructure Through the Law Reports

Importantly, Alberga didn’t just practice law—he helped build the system that supports it. In the early 1980s, he founded the Cayman Islands Law Reports. His personal archive of legal judgments, dating back to 1952, became the core of this essential reference tool.

The first volume was published in 1987. Alberga served as consulting editor for over three decades, continuing until 2020. Through this work, he ensured lawyers and judges had access to a consistent body of legal precedent—something that continues to benefit the jurisdiction today.

Recognition for a Lifetime of Service

In 2011, Alberga received one of the highest honors in the Cayman Islands legal profession. His portrait was placed in the courthouse, symbolizing his exceptional contributions. This rare tribute reflected the widespread respect he earned throughout his career.

A Legacy Carried Forward by Michael Alberga

Alberga’s legacy continues through his son, Michael Alberga. Michael has become a respected leader in both the legal and business communities. He specializes in regulatory law, government relations, and advising high-net-worth clients.

As a result, the Alberga family’s influence on the Cayman Islands legal landscape remains strong and ongoing.

An Inspiration for Future Generations

Ramon Alberga QC was more than a brilliant lawyer. He was a visionary and a builder of legal institutions. As a Cayman Islands Bar pioneer, he set high standards that continue to guide legal professionals today. His work laid a solid foundation for future generations to build upon.
